On September 12, 1876, the Alexius Real School was opened in Perm. It was named after Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, the son of Emperor Alexander II, who had visited Perm not long before the opening.

The school was founded on the initiative of the Mayor of Perm, a major entrepreneur and philanthropist Ivan Ivanovich Lyubimov. It was he who on July 20, 1873, submitted to the City Duma a proposal to establish a real school and to name it Alexius, shortly after the departure of the Grand Duke from Perm, and expressed his readiness to donate his two-storey stone house on Voskresenskaya Square for the school and, additionally, to allocate a large amount of money. The Duma gratefully accepted Lyubimov’s proposal.

The Minister of Public Education of Russia, Count Dmitry Andreevich Tolstoy, visited the opening of the Alexius Real School.

On June 11, 1887, the uncle of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, Chairman of the State Council, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich, visited the school with his son, Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich. When visiting, Mikhail Nikolayevich noticed that many students wore glasses, although they did not study, unlike students of grammar schools, the ancient languages (Latin and Greek).

In 1893, the school participated in the World Exhibition in Chicago, and in 1896 in the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod.

Among the graduates of the Alexius Real School was Boris Mikhailovich Shaposhnikov, Marshal of the Soviet Union, Chief of the General Staff during the Great Patriotic War. The Hero of the Soviet Union, Major-General of Engineer Troops Nikolai Vasilyevich Krisanov also graduated from the Alexius Real School, he played an important role in the Battle of the Dnieper at the end of 1943 and in liberation of Kyiv. Today the former building of the Alexius Real School houses the Perm Aviation College named after General Arkadiy Dmitrievich Shvetsov (1892-1953), an outstanding aircraft engine designer, who also graduated from the Real School.
